Botox for TMJ pain or tight muscles!

Question: Is it possible to get Botox for TMJ pain or tight muscles? Short answer would be: Yes you can! Botox is a muscle relaxant and therefore it is going to help tight muscles. I must explain that this is off labeled use of Botox.

Question: Is it possible to get Botox for TMJ pain or tight muscles?

Short answer would be: Yes you can! Botox is a muscle relaxant and therefore it is going to help tight muscles. I must explain that this is off labeled use of Botox.

*Botox has been used in Migraines successfully. It is injected in the muscles in temporal and head area. Although Botox for Migraines has been approved but for TMJ, I am afraid, it is not. The only way you can get that injected, would be using Botox Cosmetics®.

TMJ: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome is pain in the jaw joint that can be caused by a variety of medical problems. The TMJ connects the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone) in front of the ear.

When Botox injected into the muscles responsible for the joint movements, it would relax muscles. There are patients ask for Botox injection in the masseter muscles. Their goal could be pain or cosmetic reasons. Botox would, over time, shrink the muscle bulk and decrease lower face volume in TMJ and Jowl area.

These are not labeled use for Botox but some patients want the injections. I am hoping by gathering these cases and the results then gradually this becomes approved indication for TMJ, Tooth grinding.

*Botox is a muscle relaxant and that becomes a great tool to improve any asymmetry. BOTOX® Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the look of both moderate to severe crow’s feet lines and frown lines between the eyebrows in adults.
